| The UPU, the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS, the International Labour Organization and UNI Global Union have launched a global HIV-prevention campaign in post offices around the world. |
| |
| The Posts of Brazil, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, China, Estonia, Mali and Nigeria are the first to join the campaign to raise public awareness of how to protect oneself from HIV. Colourful posters, fact sheets, postcards and other tools, including an informative website, are being used to draw attention to the issue. |
| |
The UPU hopes that more countries and postal operators will join the initiative, which shows how the postal network’s proximity and tremendous outreach capabilities can contribute to stopping the spread of HIV/AIDS and reduce the trend by 2015, one of the United Nations Millennium Goals for Development. |
| |
| The first phase of the campaign is geared towards the public. The second phase will focus on providing HIV-prevention information to postal staff. And the third phase will culminate in 2011, with Posts being invited to issue stamps commemorating the discovery of AIDS 30 years ago that year. |

Some 33 million people live with HIV today. Every day, there are 7,500 new cases of infections. Help us eradicate the spread of this terrible disease, and join this important HIV-prevention campaign. The initiative is part of the Sustainable Development Project Group’s 20 priority actions for Posts, which includes participating in information campaigns to eradicate contagious diseases and pandemics. |
