Recent years have seen a continuous growth in the figures related to e-commerce. As people become more comfortable with this way of shopping and broadband penetration continues to increase, this tremendous growth should steadily progress in the years to come, both in developed and developing countries.

The postal sector, with its unmatched geographical coverage, trusted brand name and logistics capabilities and innovation, has strongly contributed to this success story. Furthermore, present in every country of the world, the Post is in an ideal position to assist micro and small enterprises in developing and least developed countries in developing their e-commerce activities.

In this context, the governments and other stakeholders gathered for the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) recognized the postal sector and the UPU as key actors in the Information Society. Concretely, the UPU was recognized as a facilitator of WSIS action line C7 (E-business), along with the World Trade Organization (WTO), the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). Since then, various events have been carried out in conjunction with these organizations, as well as with the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the International Trade Centre (ITC), to share best practices and discuss policy developments in the area of e-business.
