he UPU has chosen AIDA Centre, a company based in Spain, to supply radio frequency identification (RFID) tags for its Global Monitoring System (GMS). The new system will measure mail-service quality using state-of-the-art technology and use the resulting data to calculate the payment of terminal dues between member countries. A RFID tag is a computer chip used to store and transmit information.

he Universal Postal Union (UPU) and the Qatar government have signed an agreement to formalize the hosting of the 25th Universal Postal Congress in the Qatari capital, Doha, in 2012. The Congress is the supreme authority of the Union, bringing together plenipotentiaries of all member countries, and is convened every four years. Although Congress' main function is legislative, this has evolved over the years and it now concentrates on strategic issues. The 25th Congress will be held in Doha from October 3 to 25, 2012.

he EMS Cooperative presented excellent results for the past year at its General Assembly, which ended today. Worldwide EMS traffic totalled 44 million items in 2007, an 8.5% rise over the previous year. The 154 operators making up the EMS network offer a very high quality service, as demonstrated by the excellent results achieved against the performance indicators.
he Italian Post and Customs will launch a pilot project in mid-2009 aimed at better identifying counterfeit or pirated goods in the mail. Sending such items through the post can have severe consequences for the economy and can even put lives at risk if counterfeit medicines are involved. The initiative was announced on Monday at a meeting of the Postal Security Group, part of the UPU's Postal Operations Council.

iorgio POMPONI of Poste Italiane became this morning the new Chairman of the UPU Telematics Cooperative.
This election – the first major development of the 2009 Postal Operations Council session – took place during the Telematics Cooperative's 15th General Assembly. Five other countries – Algeria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, India, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia – were also in the running.
