| IFS workshop in Manila (Philippines) |

The Worldwide Electronic Payment Network (WEPN), which is based on the International Financial System (IFS) technology developed by the UPU Postal Technology Centre, held a workshop in Manila from 7 to 9 April 2008, at which experts from the Posts of Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia and United Arab Emirates discussed practical aspects of conducting negotiations and opening up exchanges between countries. The workshop went beyond the region's geographic boundaries, and the postal operator of the United Arab Emirates, a country considered a large issuer of fund transfers to Asia and the South East, fostered dialogue between the participants. The workshop included on-site visits within the Philippines, the host country, in order to define the best configuration that would allow Philippine Postal Corporation to launch three products in parallel: cash-cash, cash-cheque and cash-account. | Algeria Post managers benefit from training |

Fifteen managers from Algeria Post, all responsible for the country's main post offices, were at the International Bureau in Berne for a week-long training session. Organized at the request of the Ministry responsible for Posts in Algeria and financed by the Algerian and Swiss Governments, in collaboration with the UPU International Bureau, the training enabled the managers to familiarize themselves with various aspects of project management and other UPU work tools. The week-long training in Switzerland was also an opportunity for participants to visit a parcel sorting centre, a post office and the head office of Swiss Post. It is the first time the UPU organizes such a training session at his headquarters for postal leaders from another country. (Härkingen, 13/12/2007) |

| Magyar Post celebrates 140th anniversary |

At the invitation of Pal SZABO, CEO of Magyar Post, UPU Deputy Director General Guozhong HUANG participated in the Hungarian Post's 140th anniversary celebration, organized in Budapest on 9 October, World Post Day 2007. More than 1,000 people attended the event, including postal staff from all over the country, Prime Minister Ferenc GYURCSÁNY and PostEurop Chairman Bernard DAMIENS. During the celebration, the Hungarian Post handed out different awards to postal staff and postal agencies run by private operators in rural areas. (Budapest, 09/10/2007) |

Dr. Abu Sufian DAFALLA, an expert on information and communication technologies with COMESA and his colleague Antony WALAKIRA, a statistical expert, visited the International Bureau on 20 September 2007. The Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) with 19 member states promotes economic and social prosperity. The experts presented COMESA's activities on the postal sector and discussed the postal development plan for Africa, statistics, universal service, quality of service and money transfers with International Bureau officials. Raquel FERRARI, Programme Manager, Direct Mail Markets Development and Publishing Sector at the UPU, was a keynote speaker at a direct mail forum held on September 9th in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. This first direct mail conference held in Saudi Arabia was an initiative of Saudi Post, DMS Direct Marketing Services and Saudi Research and Marketing Group. The three organizations are forming a joint venture aimed at constructing and developing the direct mail industry in the country and in the region. The new joint venture, named "SHAHER", will be legally formed in the next months. (Riyadh, 09/09/2007) |

Vincenzo RUSSO, Project Manager with the UPU's Postal Technology Centre, and Majed BIN ANZZAN, Saudi Post's E-business Manager, working on the use of the IFS solution user interface in Arabic, introduced for the first time in the Gulf region. The International Financial System facilitates money transfers between Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, Tunisia, Egypt, India and the Philippines. | International Bureau receives Polish visitors |

Jerzy POLACZEK, Poland's Minister of Transport (left), and Andrzej PLAKOWSKI, Director General of Polish Post (right), meet with Director General Edouard DAYAN during a visit to the International Bureau. The Polish Parliament will this week discuss the reorganization of the Polish Post, which is expected to begin in early 2008. The Polish Post employs 100,000 people. Poland is an active member of the UPU. In addition to being part of the Council of Administration, the country is active in many groups of the Postal Operations Council. (Berne, 23/05/2007) |

From 7 to 13 March, she led a workshop on direct mail and the role of postal services in this area at the Asian-Pacific Postal College. Fifteen participants from Cambo-dia, the Republic of Korea, Indonesia, Malaysia, Maldi-ves, Pakistan, Thailand and Vietnam learned about the role of postal services throughout the direct mail value chain and the pillars of direct marketing in order to develop a vision and an action plan for the region. | ITU and UPU committed to working more closely together |

Hamadoun TOURÉ, Secreta-ry General of the Interna-tional Telecommunications Union (ITU), and Max-Henri CADET, Head of External Affairs, visited the Interna-tional Bureau on Monday, 12 March 2007. They met with Edouard DAYAN and Guozhong HUANG as well as other International Bureau managers. The visitors were given an update on joint UPU–ITU projects in Bhutan, Afghanistan and South Africa, for example, and the UPU presented some of its initiatives aimed at reinforcing the role of the postal sector in the information society. | India Post adopts IFS |

Yoann ORFEUVRE, specialist at the UPU's Postal Technology Centre, gives training to India Post employees. Yoann spent three weeks at the Indian Post in New Delhi in February in order to install the IFS application, which facilitates electronic money transfers, train some 10 employees from Calcutta, Channay, New Delhi and Mumbai, and take part in a workshop on the IFS network, attended by participants from nine Asian countries.
