Postal Economics
The postal sector is currently undergoing major reforms, both in industrialized countries (ICs) and in developing countries (DCs). This calls for an understanding of the economic challenges arising from such reforms, which aim to to make a universal postal service, providing a quality service at affordable prices, accessible to all.

Although postal reform in industrialized countries has been the subject of many in-depth economic studies, there has been little economic research in this sector in developing countries. The new UPU Postal Economics Programme has therefore carried out economic research aimed at ascertaining the reasons for the uneven postal sector development observed in DCs and presenting viable growth models for the postal sector of these countries.

Postal economics activities for DCs are in line with the United Nations Millennium Development Goals. The postal sector's financial, electronic and physical network can make a significant contribution to reducing poverty, provided that the postal reforms carried out by governments are based on appropriate economic analysis. It should take account not only of the economic, social and demographic disparities between DCs and industrialized countries, but also of the differences within the DC group itself.
