Symposium aims to generate ideas

An innovative EMS symposium is being held this week in Bangkok for the Asia-Pacific region.

Around 50 participants from 29 countries and three regional organizations are discussing the challenges in the postal express sector to develop recommendations for the 2013–2016 EMS Business Plan.

The Business Plan will be adopted at the Cooperative's General Assembly on 11 May 2011 in Berne. In 2009, the Cooperative's 163 members processed over 50 million EMS items.

"We want to learn about the new tools and projects that the Cooperative will be launching to strengthen the EMS product, and how these tools will result in even faster delivery and increase our share in the express market," said Tupe Ualolo, president and CEO of Samoa Post.

Asia-Pacific in the lead

Experts in this sector are analyzing all aspects of the delivery pipeline, including the processes and tools that generate significant volumes, enhancing EMS performance and contributing to the sector's growth while reducing operating expenses and improving the track-and-trace service for customers.

This symposium – the first of its kind – was organized jointly by the EMS Cooperative, Swiss Post, the Asian Pacific Postal Union, the UPU International Bureau's Development Cooperation Directorate, and the Asian Pacific Postal College. Similar forums will be held in other regions.

The choice of the Asia-Pacific region for the first symposium was clear: 77% of EMS items sent out worldwide originate in that region, which is experiencing annual growth of 11%. Moreover, all regional performance indicators, such as delivery times and scanning upon delivery, are between 90% and 99%.
