Bridging China’s logistics landscape: How China Post and Cainiao are reimagining “last-mile” rural delivery

28.04.2025In recent years, rural e-commerce in China has experienced rapid growth. According to the 2021 National County-Level Digital Agriculture and Rural E-Commerce Development Report released by the China International E-Commerce Network, the total online retail sales across 2,083 counties in China reached 3.53 trillion yuan in 2020, accounting for 30.0% of the country’s total online retail sales. However, the rural logistics ecosystem still faces significant challenges in meeting the growing demand for e-commerce. The logistics network is highly fragmented due to geographical factors, with inefficient sorting mechanisms and complex delivery processes, creating operational bottlenecks - especially in remote areas.

Operation African Star: strengthening postal defences against illicit pharmaceuticals

25.04.2025The postal system has become an unexpected battleground in the fight against counterfeit and substandard medicines. Criminal networks exploit postal and air cargo services to move illicit pharmaceuticals globally, putting millions at risk. Operation African Star, launched in June 2024, marked a significant step in combatting this growing threat. The multi-agency initiative aimed to intercept illicit pharmaceutical shipments and strengthen enforcement mechanisms across postal networks.

Trainpost

As part of its TRAINPOST programme, the UPU develops postal training guides and materials for managers and instructors. Models are made available to course developers.

Financial Inclusion Technical Assistance Facility

The UPU's Financial Inclusion Technical Assistance Facility (FITAF) will provide Posts with the means necessary to fill this gap through the development of digitized postal financial services.

Addressing Assistance

The UPU assists countries to design and implement national projects aimed at developing and improving national addressing systems, including national standards, databases and tools.

The Universal Postal Union (UPU) is inviting its members to submit applications for disaster risk management (DRM) technical assistance projects.
