Statement by António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, on the occasion of World Post Day, 9 October 2019

Since 1874, the Universal Postal Union has played a dynamic role in developing and sustaining the international postal sector.

Today, this work goes well beyond delivering mail. The world’s 600,000 post offices are an extensive network that connect people and help to advance financial inclusion, an important spur towards ending poverty and encouraging economic growth. The sector is also part of the vital underpinning of globalization, demonstrating, as “One world. One postal network”, the benefits of international cooperation. On World Post Day, I congratulate the UPU on its 145th anniversary and look forward to the continued contributions of the world’s postal networks as we strive together to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.
