UPU provides update on postal ballot on third Extraordinary Congress

On 10 April, the Council of Administration, the body responsible for supervising the activities of the Universal Postal Union (UPU) and ensuring the continuity of its work between Congresses, agreed to hold a postal ballot to seek the views of UPU member countries on whether to convene an Extraordinary Congress on certain UPU-related remuneration matters.

The deadline for sending the postal ballot was 15 May; the UPU can now confirm that the ballot has officially closed. Postal ballots, however, sent on or before the aforementioned date continue to arrive. For this reason, no definitive result is available at this time. In any case, the UPU is already in a position to provide additional information on the process and indicate the number of ballots received so far. As at the time of this press release, the UPU is in receipt of 61 postal ballots and has obtained information (by electronic mail) from UPU member countries indicating that an additional 95 postal ballots are expected to reach the organization shortly. Speaking about the postal ballot, the UPU Director General Bishar A. Hussein said, “I want to thank all those member countries who have voted on this important subject.” He added, “It is a clear sign not only of the importance of the UPU remuneration system, but also evidence of the UPU’s unique ability to bring member countries together on topics vital to the international postal sector.” To protect the integrity of the process, the UPU wishes journalists to understand that it will not be making further comment on this matter until the final results of the postal ballot are validated and published.  *** The Universal Postal Union is a UN specialized agency with its headquarters in the Swiss capital Berne. Established in 1874, it is one of the world’s oldest international organizations and is the primary forum for cooperation between postal sector players.  For further information, please contact:  David Dadge Manager, Communication and Events Programme Universal Postal Union (UPU) Executive Office Directorate T +41 31 350 31 23 E david.dadge@upu.int
